When I first started this class I would read an article and try to remember everything as I read it. There would not be any annotating going on as I read. As I went through this course I realized that annotating helps you engage in the reading. Asking questions about what I have just read helps me think beyond the text. My approach is first, as I am reading if I come across any words that are unfamiliar to me I will write them down and look up the definition to those words. Next, I usually highlight anything in the text that stands out to me, regardless if it is important or not if it stands out to me in some way it is being highlighted. Finally, as I am reading I will ask myself questions along the way. After I have read the full text I will go back and try to answer the questions that I previously asked myself. The way I decided to mark up the reading is as I said before if something in the text stands out to me for any reason. For example, when we started reading the piece by David Foster Wallace “Consider the Lobster” we went over it as a class in the beginning of the year and then again at the end of the year. The first time we went through it in the beginning of the year I highlighted the things that stood out to me and defined the words that I did not understand in the reading. I did not ask myself questions on any parts of the reading the first time we went through it. Defining the words that I did not understand after reading it the first time helped me understand it better. The second time we read the piece towards the end of the year I understood it much better than the first time. I did the same thing, I highlighted all the parts that stood out to me, define a few words that I missed the first time, but this time I also asked myself questions as I went along. After I finished reading the piece I went back and answered the questions that I asked myself. This made me go back and think of things in the authors point of view which ultimately made me understand the reading much better than before. Thinking about the questions I asked myself the way the author would approach those questions made me dig deep into the reading to make me find the exact points the author, in this case David Foster Wallace was trying to make.
