Soylent; the New Quick-Food
I do not think that soylent will replace food as a whole, but it will be a “filler” if someone does not have the time to prepare a whole meal. Food has been a part of my live since the day I was born. Eating food has many more proposes than to just fill you up. When I sit down and eat a well prepared meal with my family not only do we eat our meal. We also talk about our day or maybe even some problems we are going through. Eating is such a big social aspect that many people often overlook. For example, when I go out to eat with my friends we relax, hangout, have a drink and share some laugh while we eat. Another example would be taking someone out for a nice romantic dinner, not only do you eat the food but the entire night is revolved around that meal. I can go on and on about the endless events you can plan around food.
Our lives do indeed revolve around food. The American culture is set to have 3 meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner with some snacks in between to hold you over until the next meal. As I was growing up going out to dinner was looked at as a reward. If I did good on a test my parents would take my family out for food, whatever we wanted. This gave me incentives to do well in school. My parents also made it a point that we always had to eat breakfast in order to start the day off right. Every morning before a test I had to make sure I ate some type of food to get the day going. We make it a priority to eat our 3 meals every day. Weather it is eating just to get a meal in or if its eating for pleasure, food is an important part of our lives. It is a priority to eat food every day, we make it our interest to turn eating food just to stay alive into eating food and having a good time along with that.
A standard eating practice in my eyes is the three meal standard schedule we revolve around. A standard eating process is usually someone sitting down at a table with a fork and knife cutting and physically eating food. When it comes to consuming soylent you do not need a fork and a knife because there is nothing to physically cut into. Soylent is a mixture of all the basic chemicals a person needs to survive mixed with water. I would imagine it to have a thick “muddy” texture to it. This is in no way shape or form what I picture when I think of a standard eating process, mostly because there is no eating when it comes to soylent. Its mixed with water all you have to do is drink it. When you think about it you do not even have to sit down to consume soylent. All you have to do is blend it up and slurp it down and there is your meal. “I feel like the six-million-dollar man. My physique has noticeably improved, my skin is clearer, my teeth whiter, my hair thicker and my dandruff gone.” He concluded, “I haven’t eaten a bite of food in thirty days, and it’s changed my life.” (widdicombe 3) Rhinehart explains that since he has changed to the all soylent diet he has seen beneficial changes to his physical appearance. Not to mention that he has saved money not having to go grocery shopping every week.
When you rise the question of “are most meals forgotten?” I would say no to that question. First of all, the intention of soylent is not to replace food as a whole. It is something that is meant to consume when you are on a crunch for time and do not have enough time to sit down and eat a meal. It is perfect if you are not financially stable enough to buy food everyday instead, you can make a soylent shake to cover the meal that you missed. People are going to realize that there is no social aspect in making a soylent drink. For the people that can afford to have a meal everyday are still going to continue to do so. I do not think you will find people going out on soylent dinner dates because it’s a bland idea and people are not looking for that when they have a dinner date in mind. So no, I do not think that people will let that social aspect of physically eating a meal disappear.
Soylent is extremely efficient when it comes to saving time and money. It is a quick and easy way to get all the nutrients you need for the day. In circumstances where people are less fortunate and can not afford to have a meal everyday soylent can in fact be a great solution. If you individually packaged enough soylent in a package to consume enough nutrients you need in a day, then you can ship them out to third world countries. You do not need a heat source or any type of preparation all you do is mix and dink. Soylent has the potential to help fix real world problems. I do not think the intention was for soylent to replace food for the everyday person. In that case I think it was intended to be a “filler” if you can’t get to a meal.

I take food for extreme granted and I think I speak for many people out there when I say that. I have been eating 3 meals a day for as long as I can remember. When I wake up in the morning the first thing I do is eat without even thinking. Whenever you are bored and do not have anything to do you can go out to dinner and end up making a night out of it. Food is also the basis of many holiday gatherings with family. For my family when it comes to thanksgiving we all get together and have a feast at my aunt’s house with all types of dishes and disserts. If we replaced that with drinking soylent then we would find ourselves sitting around the table twiddling our thumbs together. When you go to a banquet the entire night is revolved around eating food and celebrating whatever event you may be celebrating. Again if you replaced the food with soylent then it takes away the social aspect and pretty much the entire
idea of a banquet. I do not think that society will be able to simply forget all the good times that have happened around eating food, all the special nights, all the holidays pretty much most social activities include food. People can not just forget. Which is why I see soylent acting as a “filler” when you do not have enough time to eat a meal.
When it comes to my experiences as a college student I see soylent in the same category as a protein shake. Whenever I do not have enough time to eat a meal I always grab a protein shake. That is basically the same thing I would do with soylent. If I was running late or needed a quick meal for some reason I would break out the soylent. I would certainly not drink soylent for pleasure. There is no way that you can get soylent to mimic the taste of an apple or candy. So if you went all in on soylent you would be missing out on the taste of all different kinds of food. You would be missing out on the culture that food brings through its unique tastes. You would be missing out on the social aspects of eating food. No more taking your girlfriend out to dinner. No more getting together with your family for a thanksgiving or Christmas meal. when you commit to all soylent it takes away the choice you have of what to eat. You would be eating the same thing day in and day out. You would be drinking the same plain sludge everyday for the rest of your life. There would be no meeting your friend out for a drink and a bite to eat, no sharing stories over a couple appetizers. There would be no meeting your co-workers out for lunch on lunch break. On football Sunday there would be no dip or chicken wings to feast on. I can go on and on for hours on all of the things that you would lose by changing to an all soylent diet. On the plus side you would be saving an extreme amount of money by not having to shop every week. You also wouldn’t need to pay for dinners or meals anymore. You would probably have a skinny physical body because you would not be consuming any unnecessary fats or carbs. You would also find that you would have a lot more time on your hands by not eating meals anymore.

Soylent; the New Quick-Food
How does the idea of replacing food with a chalky shake sit with you? This is the idea of a man named Rob Rhinehart a graduate of Georgia Tech who has been trying to find a quick and easy replacement for food. “Rhinehart compiled a list of thirty-five nutrients required for survival. Then, instead of heading to the grocery store, he ordered them off the Internet—mostly in powder or pill form—and poured everything into a blender, with some water. The result, a slurry of chemicals, looked like gooey lemonade.” (Widdicombe 1) It seems like Rhinehart has found a good replacement meal idea. Not to replace food in general, but if you happen to be running late and can not get a meal in you can whip up a quick soylent shake. I do not think that soylent will replace food as a whole, but it will be a “filler” if someone does not have the time to prepare a whole meal. Food has been a part of my live since the day I was born. Eating food has many more proposes than to just fill you up. All in all, I think that soylent in the United States will most likely act as a “filler” product, like a protein shake. I do not think that it will replace food as a whole. I don’t think people could live with losing the social aspect that comes along with eating food. It is good for college students or people that are on a very tight budget. Replacing food for soylent for the everyday person is something I do not see happening.
